Scaring the Hell Out of Teens

Rev. Meeks, of Chicago’s Salem Baptist Church had “Nights of Terror” on Halloween when he “scared the hell out of teens.” Meeks causes days of terror every Sunday when he scares the hate into black people. Nights of Terror is how Meeks co-opts Halloween to proselytize. Days of terror are when Meeks co-opts Christianity to shun. Nights of Terror has a message that can be dismissed as silly ranting. Days of terror contain messages that cannot be ignored because they are echoed by our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers.

Every Sunday Meeks is just one of many black preachers who use sermons to teach hate. In the name of praise, they demonized black lgbt people. In the name of Jesus, they justify oppressing black women. In the name of Christianity, they condemn all “others” to hell. Meanwhile, black people represent fifty-percent of the new infections of HIV in the U.S. Young people between thirteen and twenty-four have the highest risk for HIV infection. Alcohol abuse and illegal drug use destroy lives. Child abuse and neglect are unaddressed. Black people are dying and many black preachers bring fire and brimstone to the foot of our deathbeds. It is time for something different.

On Monday, November 13th at 6:30pm our community will have an open conversation about the pain and disconnect caused by days of terror.
